Adding keywords to Chrome bookmarks (à la Firefox)

Comments (0)

When you add keywords to your bookmark in Firefox, you can quickly access them with only a few letters. For example, if you assign “rtm” as a keyword to RememberTheMilk.com, you will automatically be redirected to this website when you type “rtm” in the URL bar.

In Chrome, this can be done quite easily too once you figure out how it’s done:

  1. Right click on the URL bar and select Edit search engines
  2. Click “Add”
  3. Fill in the information as for a normal bookmark.
  4. Type your URL in the URL field. The keyword field becomes your keyword.

We simply add a new search engine with no search parameters. From now on, the keyword you entered will direct you straight to the website. Wasn’t that simple?

How to disable Windows Live Search in the Awesome bar (Firefox 3)

If you installed a Live product recently, you might have noticed Microsoft gave itself the rights to mess with your Firefox settings without your consents. Now when you type “flugabwehrkanonenpanzer” in the Awesome bar, it will redirect you to Live Search’s results instead of using Google’s much superior search engine (or to the appropriate website).

The fix to this problem is not available in the Preferences page so you will have to fix it yourself. Here’s how you do it:

  1. In the address bar, type “about:config“. This is the Firefox config page where you can mess with all the settings you want. Be careful not to break anything!
  2. Find the browser.search.defaultenginename entry.
  3. Right click on the entry and select Reinitialize (or something similar)
  4. Voilà!

Your search bar should now work properly. If you wanna walk the extra mile, feel free to tell Microsoft what you think about their asshole-ish behavior.
