DesignsForCoders rocks

Recently, I was contracted to take cfqfederation10.org and transfer it to WordPress so its member could edit the content themselves. While installing WordPress and the ensuing tasks were a breeze, I was struck with an absolute lack of inspiration when it came to the design. After wasting enough time in Photoshop, I got tired and called for DesignsForCoders‘ help. Joe DaSilva, the man behind it, is a damn great designer and got my design ready for launch in under a week for a mere 300$.

The Mighty Wallet

Every time I get a new wallet, I spend much more time than I should on attempting to find the perfect wallet for my needs. I must admit I have a small butt, and thick wallets make me uncomfortable when I’m in bureaucrat mode. It turns out that the wallet alone is 60% of the bulk, since I rarely carry more than my cards and papers with me. I rarely carry bills, let alone change, and I don’t need to keep any order for 5 plastic cards.

I then stumbled upon a post about Dynomighty’s Mighty Wallet. Unlike other wallets, this one is made from the same thin plastic used in Tyvek envelopes, making it slim enough to go unnoticed. On top of being incredibly thin, they come in a variety of cool designs. This YouTube video covers everything you need to know about it.

Since the shipping is ridiculously expensive, you might consider ordering them off eBay, where they sell for about 18$, shipping included.

UPDATE: I’ve received my wallet and have used it for a few weeks. It’s barely noticeable in my backpocket and has a very durable construction. While it does not have separate pockets for every card, it makes up for it by being astoundingly compact. Did I mention it looks damn good, too? I have the Elysium model, but there are plenty of wicked designs available. Go and get one!

Why I stopped using Windows Live

A few months ago, I’ve decided to stop using Windows Live once and for all. I had never been a fan of the Live services, but I still kept an account for an occasional chat on Messenger. Things were getting worse by the day for the service, as the spam-to-useful message ratio went past 10:1, so I uninstalled Windows Live Messenger, signed off Live Mail and I have not looked back since then. Thinking about it, the real messages I received among the piles of spam were chain letters and virus warnings, since the relevant information was now being conveyed via Facebook.

It turns out most of the spam originates from people I know. Most of them probably fell for a “crack MSN passwords” website and gave away their credentials to spam bots. A simple monthly password change or better access control could rid the servers of that e-waste.

A first day at home

3 days ago, on a bright, hot summer day like there are few in Quebec’s summers, I was sitting inside a small coffee shop, impatiently waiting to lay my signature on my very first web development contract. Oh, I had made websites before, but none I got paid for. An hour later, we went our separate ways; me with a check, them with a warranty of getting their work done.

A weekend and 15 hours working at Staples later, it was time to get to work. Even if I wasn’t going very far today, save the occasional to-and-fro between the desk and the kitchen counter, it was no excuse to avoid leaving my PJ’s. LifeHacker said it: “no pants, no productivity”, and I wholeheartedly agree!

With a simple rule in mind (don’t check Reddit) and a good night’s sleep, it took me three hours to clear my task list without even checking Facebook or Google Reader. Thanks to a few useful tools, my first day was a success.

Do

  • Dress up as if I you were going to work
  • Use Remember the Milk to get things done without forgetting anything
  • Keep a clean and distraction-free workspace
  • Set pauses to leave the computer and do something else

Don’t

  • Check Facebook, Reddit or Google Reader
  • Work in the basement

Redditors, Arbitrary Day is approaching, get ready!

For those who have not seen the ads, there is something great happening over Reddit called Arbitrary Day. It’s a huge, worldwide gift exchange where you are paired with a random redditor and have to send him or her a gift over the mail. My username is n1c0_ds and I will participate. What am I to send? It’s a mystery!

Now on Wikimedia Commons

I started uploading my work to Wikimedia Commons. I strongly encourage everyone else to do the same whenever they have the time. I am too lazy to start uploading my massive photo collection anywhere, but I’d love to put it on Google Maps someday.

Omegle is awesome (in less than 20 seconds)

I just started going on Omegle when boredom strikes. I’ve quickly figured out that a lot of people begin conversations with “asl”, so I have came up with a great introduction “you have 20 seconds to be awesome”. A user, here, came up with this reply:

Me: “You have 20 seconds to be awesome”

Stranger: “I’m secretly chuck norris disguised as clark kent, my balls are made from the nails of godzilla and I breathe awesomeness.”

Needless to say, interesting conversation ensued.

Hostmonster’s new password requirements

Comments (0)

At Hostmonster, they’ve updated the security and I’m now asked to create a new password. I already used something quite safe for my own use: not a dictionary word, contains numbers and makes absolutely no sense.

However this is not enough, since Hostmonster went batshit insane with security and requires a password that contains an uppercase letter, a symbol and a number that must contain at least 8 characters. For Pete’s sake, I’m a grown adult now, I can choose my passwords myself, and I’m pretty certain that no one will even try to log in on my account anyway.

Thanks for wasting my time.
